Music to Spark Healing

Are you so incredibly sick and so sick of being sick that you are stuck? Just plum stuck in the muck and hopeless? Not only have months passed but now years are passing and the muck of chronic illness keeps getting deeper and more depressing? At this point no pill or healthy food is solving much of anything? I mean so worn out and lost in the situation that there is not enough energy to take action to do anything, just plum worn out. Time to take NO action with something you don’t have to put any effort into. NO musical ability needed to take this action.

Turn On the Music

Whatever music you already own, turn it on. Let it run all day in your environment. If you are like I am and like different kinds of music then let the variety be a joyful noise.

Let the classical run alongside the country. Enjoy the twists of hard rock-and-roll then praise-and-worship music. Take what you already have and get it playing in the background.

That all by itself makes some positive change. We will cover the science in a moment but for now, turn ON your music.

If it has been so long that you don’t even know where to start, go to YouTube and type in any artist or type of music that comes to mind in the search bar. Pick something, anything, and get it playing.

Adjust the Volume

There will be times when having music loud lifts one out of the overwhelm of illness. Other times, just having it on softly in the background will help to maintain a lighter sense in your environment.

It resembles changing the tone of the situation. Music by itself does not heal the illness, instead, it creates a healing environment in which your body may heal.

Music can calm the soul or spark the heart to create change. Similar to being able to reach out and grab a much needed helping hand out of the situation. A new beginning to being pulled out of the muck of chronic illness.

It does more than simply change your mood, there is a shift that takes place that redirects the desperation of chronic illness.

“Music makes us feel like we are back in the arms of our mother, the ultimate source of love and security. When all is said and done, it is Socratic elenchus of self examination and self acceptance (how we feel internally about ourselves) and external love; mom, music, warmth, fresh air, and support of the family bring us security and fulfillment of our maximum potential.” ~ NCBI – Music, Medicine, Healing, and the Genome Project

It turns out that a moderate noise level is a sweet spot for creativity. Ambient noise apparently gets our creative juices flowing. ~ Source, Is Noise Always Bad? Exploring the Effects of Ambient Noise on Creative CognitionRavi Mehta, Rui (Juliet) Zhu and Amar Cheema Journal of Consumer Research Vol. 39, No. 4 (December 2012), pp. 784-799

Part of creativity is imagination and it takes an imagination to believe that one can actually move through and past chronic illness.

He Got Creative Soul.

Feel the Impact of Music

We have all felt an impact of music at different points in our lives.

  • A certain song provokes memories of a past love.
  • A different song or tune stirs a mother’s heart with lullabies hummed to her babies.
  • Rock-and-roll reminds us of teenage years drag-racing on main street and getting away with it.
  • Certain songs turn on the tears, releasing immense grief.
  • Loud, almost deafening music to numb the pain of long summers while driving chasing the sunset.
  • Classical music lifts us out of bed and transports us to a favorite live symphony.
  • Morning birds chirping away that motivate one to get out of bed and start the day.
  • The soothing impact of listening to ocean waves that lowers one into a sudden deep sleep.

We have all had those moments when a song lifts us to another space in time. If it can do that, what else can music do?

Healing Benefits of Music

Today we’re discovering how we too can use music to heal, repair, and protect against disease.

“Listening to slow classical music causes the heart beat and pulse rate to slow down to the beat of the music. As the body becomes relaxed and alert, the mind is able to concentrate more easily. …Researchers discovered that listening to music can decrease the amount of the cortisol, a stress-related hormone produced by the body in response to stress.” ~ Scientific Research into the Effects of Music

UK Study

In fact, a recent study by the UK-based Journal of Advanced Nursing has revealed some impressive findings…

They saw chronic pain and other painful conditions reduced by up to 21% and depression by 25%.

The Journal of Advanced Nursing study also found music helped people feel less disabled by their condition.

And more and more, music is being used in hospitals to soothe postoperative pain, lower blood pressure, and boost immunity.

The reason for this is because music can balance hormones, boost the release of endorphins, giving you a greater sense of peace, which could lead to faster recovery and give you more profound healing.

This more current study recalls the results of a similar research effort published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing in 2006. Aside from a reduction in chronic pain, the authors found that music could also alleviate psychiatric symptoms in patients living with depression.

This study used people aged 21-65 years with chronic non-malignant pain. Journal of Advanced Nursing. Volume 54.5, pages 553 to 562.

Researcher Dr Sandra Siedlecki, of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, said, “Our results show that listening to music had a statistically significant effect on the two experimental groups, reducing pain, depression and disability and increasing feelings of power.”

Professor Marion Good, who also worked on the study, said, “Listening to music has already been shown to promote a number of positive benefits and this research adds to the growing body of evidence that it has an important role to play in modern healthcare.”

Science of Music

Rhythm is part of daily life. How we walk, talk, sleep, breath and have beating hearts, it is all rhythmic. Most of us take these simple things for granted until we get chronically ill and cannot do them as usual.

When we have been ill for years it feels like our rhythm has been removed from us. Things don’t sync up like they should and we feel out-of-sorts and out-of-wack all of the time. Music can help us to re-sync our bodies.

  • “Music is a part of the cycle of natural life. Music is based on rhythm and harmony. Human life is based on rhythm. Day and night, seasonal changes, and all physiological and biological functions are rhythmic. We inhale and exhale, our hearts beat in systole (contraction) and diastole (expansion or relaxation.) Sleeping, eating, menstrual cycles, walking, talking, and other, if not all, functions of life are rhythmic.”~ NCBI – Music, Medicine, Healing, and the Genome Project
  • “Rhythmic patterns appear throughout the universe, from the very small to the very large. Atoms are patterns of probability waves, molecules are vibrating structures, and living organisms manifest multiple, interdependent patterns of fluctuations. Plants, animals and human beings undergo cycles of activity and rest, and all their physiological functions oscillate in rhythms of various periodicities” ~ Fritjof – The Tao of Physics

Calming our bodies, our nervous system, reduces stress on our bodies allowing them to move through healing.

  • Dr. Meymandi explains that, “Music brings about the excitation of the limbic system with corresponding changes in neurotransmitters, such as catecholamine, indolamine, dopamine, endorphin, and the latest, neuron growth hormone.”
  • Listen to this… “Music, which may be the most ancient human language, has the potential to improve neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders by creating new brain cells and neural connectivity. Not only that, but music restores hormonal and immunological balance in a way mirroring adaptogenic herbs”.Ali Le Vere, B.S., B.S. – Senior Researcher-GreenMedInfo, How Music Can Support Brain Regeneration & Healing

Music History

Throughout human history, music has had the power to transform, mentally, spiritually and physically. Now we are rediscovering what the ancients have known for centuries, music has the power to heal.

In this article published by The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in 2009, Dr. Assad Meymandi points out the therapeutic value of music since ancient times:

  • “Greek physicians used flutes, lyres, and zitters to heal their patients. They used vibration to aid in digestion, treat mental disturbance, and induce sleep.
  • Aristotle (323–373 BCE), in his famous book De Anima, wrote that flute music could arouse strong emotions and purify the soul.
  • Ancient Egyptians describe musical incantations for healing the sick.”
  • You can even see proof going back to Biblical times with Zephaniah 3:17 – “He will rejoice over you with joyful songs!”

Sound, Energy and Emotion are All Deeply Connected

Sound can benefit us not only on a physical level but also on an emotional and energetic level (Mind, Body and Soul). Human emotions have their immediate expression through sound. Emotional blockages may occur when sound (human emotions) are repressed.  Sound can be used to unlock the blocked emotions and release them.

Sound has many healing benefits including:

  • Re-balancing the physical, emotional and spiritual body
  • Relief from stress and anxiety
  • Regenerates the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Awakens higher states of consciousness
  • Stimulates the circulatory and glandular systems
  • Improves sleep
  • Increases vital energy flow, creativity, intuition and motivation
  • Sound moves energy trapped in our cells

There is nothing musical about me, NOTHING. Cannot sing and clap at the same time. Don’t know the difference between the words “note” and “cord.” I could not tap my foot to a song to save my life. Got kicked out of guitar lessons in 5th grade because I couldn’t even comprehend the instructions on how to get started.

We do not need to be musical to receive the benefits of music. I am the least musical person I know, but I do know that music has helped to transform my mind and body into a healing environment.

Wake Up With Music

In many ways, chronic illness is not about the illness itself, it is about waking up to who we really are, what our purpose in life is and how to proceed in the fullest manner possible. Sound, music, theater, opera, ballet, they all provide an instrument of introspection to help us see that and help us to move forward and through the illness.

Write the soundtrack to your life and your health!!
