Fresh squeezed orange juice has many health benefits. That is when you get around the sugar spikes causing insulin issues that can lead to and complicate health problems. How did real food get so complicated? Adding coconut milk and protein powder turns ordinary orange juice into an adrenal power drink that most everyone loves.
I love fresh squeezed orange juice too much to give it up, especially knowing health benefits of oranges. For one, it is high in folate to support adrenal-fatigue induced depression. There are too many benefits of fresh orange juice to completely rule it out due to the high sugar content that can raise your insulin levels. Turning it into an adrenal power drink solves the problem and tastes great.
Adrenal Glands
When you think of the adrenal glands, stress might come to mind. The adrenal glands are arguably best known for secreting the hormone adrenaline, which rapidly prepares your body to spring into action in a stressful situation. Adrenal glands also contribute to your health even at times when your body isn’t under extreme stress. In fact, they release hormones that are essential for you to live.
Stress Equals “Fight or Flight Response”
We all have stress in our lives. When we are under too much pressure, our “fight or flight response” kicks into gear. The primary stress hormone, called cortisol, gets released in this state. We need a certain low amount of cortisol for everyday life to keep us awake, alive and functioning. It is when we get overly stressed that the proper release of cortisol is impaired and leads to adrenal insufficiency. Those with chronic illness usually have adrenal issues creating additional problems.
The goal is to shut down this stress response. Balancing blood sugar (consequently assisting in proper metabolism, adrenal, and thyroid functions) helps to get us out of the fight or flight response. This adrenal orange juice contains the proper ratio of fat, carbs, and protein to accomplish this balancing act.
Adrenal Creamy Orange Juice
- 8 ounces fresh squeezed orange juice (preferably organic)
- 2-4 Tablespoons coconut cream (preferably organic) (organic raw cream if you consume dairy)
- 2-3 Tablespoons organic pasture raised collagen
- 1/8-1/2 teaspoon of Himalayan Pink or Sea Salt
- Fresh mint or basil is a tasty addition
Place all ingredients in a shaker bottle or blender and mix well. Then drink!
Creamy Orange Ice Cream
Same recipe as above. Pour into a container and freeze. When frozen, scoop out and eat as ice cream. Sprinkle with cinnamon for taste and improves insulin sensitivity.
To make popsicles, simply pour above recipe into molds and freeze. Kids love it.
Are you stressed in any way? Have you tried a drink like this before bedtime to help you sleep at night?
