Lyme disease comes with many names and we had to get familiar with the different terms to get a grip of the magnitude of it which took some of the fear out of it. We can do the same with CoronaVirus.
A Virus of Many Names
Official names have been announced for the virus responsible for COVID-19 (previously known as “2019 novel coronavirus”) and the disease it causes. According to WHO, the official names are:
Disease – coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
Virus – severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
Just like HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, the disease. Or people know of the disease measles but not so much the virus that causes it, rubeola.

Human Coronavirus Types
Coronaviruses are named for the crown-like spikes on their surface. There are four main sub-groupings of coronaviruses, known as alpha, beta, gamma, and delta.
Human coronaviruses were first identified in the mid-1960s. The seven coronaviruses that can infect people are:
Common human coronaviruses
- 229E (alpha coronavirus)
- NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
- OC43 (beta coronavirus)
- HKU1 (beta coronavirus)
Other human coronaviruses
- MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS)
- SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS)
- SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19)
People around the world commonly get infected with human coronaviruses 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1.
Sometimes coronaviruses that infect animals can evolve and make people sick and become a new human coronavirus. Three recent examples of this are 2019-nCoV, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV.
To Those CoronaVirus Has Touched
My deepest sympathies to those who have suffered from this virus. The numbers are rising and I am not trying to belittle the situation for those who are suffering through it.
I am. There is too much focus on this virus. There is too much fear, too much stress. Sure, knowing more about the different names helps a bit but getting too lost in all the details only exacerbates stress.
There is a whole other side to CoronaVirus that has captured my attention. I do not easily give in to fear so I actually found it fun to let my mind wander into this completely different theory…

Jumping into conspiracy theories is just as stressful as jumping into the media fear-mongering tactics. Whichever side of the fence you are on, don’t let the stress of it overwhelm your health, your emotional or your physical health.
Use This Wild Time To Activate Your Brain
Lots of opinions out there so what do you think? To have your own intelligent opinion, you have to activate your brain. Yes, even though you are chronically ill you can activate your brain to a higher standard than you realize.
Use this time of global chaos to come up with your opinion on the subject. This is a grand time to activate your brain. I know how hard that is during chronic illness. I also know that if you don’t try, your brain just gets mushier. Yes, mushier is an official illness term!!!
As backward as it may sound, I actually care more that you work on activating your brain during this wild time than anything else. Don’t blindly listen to me, the media, your friends or your family. Take in the facts from different sources and come up with your own ideas on the subject.
Now that is taking on chaos and stress head-on!!!

Until this became a U.S. National Emergency on 3/13/20, I did not say much about it at all. I did not want to feed into the fear. Now that this has turned into what it has, my hope is that I can speak out to reduce fear and chaos amongst the chronically ill.
