What is Mitochondria?

Mitochondria, Powerhouse of the cell

If I make this oversimplified, you won’t have to read any farther!! Mitochondria is your ATP, your energy. There you have it, easy-smeezie. So, where is it located and how do we get to it, repair it and build it so we feel the energy in our everyday lives???

If you have never heard the word mitochondria, you might have heard about ATP. Even if you have never heard about either of those, you certainly know what energy is. Either you have enough of it to keep you going, or you don’t. When we are chronically ill, we are not in an abundance of energy.

What Are Mitochondria?

Keeping it simple; they are our ATP which is what produces energy in our bodies for us to function and thrive.

  • They take in nutrients
  • Breaks them down
  • Then creates energy-rich molecules for the cell

Mitochondria: The Conductors of the Physiological Orchestra
Mitochondria are rod-shaped, double-membrane organelles responsible for production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cellular energy currency that powers metabolic reactions. In addition to transforming organic material into ATP, mitochondria are intimately involved in heme, amino acid, lipid, and steroid synthesis, in optimal functioning of the energetically demanding immune and nervous systems, and in dictating cell fates. Mitochondria mediate cellular proliferation, and regulate the energetically intensive process of apoptosis, or cell suicide, via release of cytochrome c through the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mtPTP).

Mitochondria are inside of our cells, specialized structures. Although they have many cellular processes, their most important function is to extract the energy that is stored in the chemical bonds of nutrients. They do this in the form of electrically charged particles called electrons and transform it into a form of energy that cells can use to power their activity, giving us energy.

What Are ATP?

Adenosine triphosphate, better known as ATP.

This mitochondrial function is the form of energy that is a molecule called ATP. This process is called cellular respiration. The powerhouse of the cell — mitochondria generate around 90 percent of all ATP produced in our body.

When mitochondria work optimally, cells are fueled efficiently and biological pathways run smoothly. But when mitochondria are dysfunctional, they accumulate damage and cellular processes start to gradually get disrupted.

Where Are Mitochondria Located?

Mitochondria are small organelles floating free throughout the cell.

Now, let’s determine their usual shape. They are usually oblong, maximizing their surface area. Mitochondria are shaped perfectly to maximize their productivity.

Hints, Tips & Tricks

How To Get Mitochondria Working Optimally

Hang on, we will get there.

I am going to bombard y’all with mitochondria blogs for the next few weeks in preparation for the Mitochondrial Summit by Dr. Jay Davidson. Dr. Jay Davidson is the “Lyme Doc” who has blessed us with the Lyme Summits for many years.
